Congress Passes Bill to Amend Constitution

Wednesday April 13 was the last Congressional meeting of the 2010-2011 school year and the Senators, Representatives and Officers got down to some serious business.

Chief Development Officer Connor Best put forth the bill that would amend the Constitution to provide for a new look in Congress.  Rather than having 5 Senators for each class, there will be a President, Vice President and Treasurer for each class.  According to the bill, this change will provide “more recognizable figures to help improve communication between the Students’ Association and the student body.”   The bill also noted that the SA Congress in particular could “benefit from having a better internal leadership structure.”

The switch to Class Officers instead of Class Senators will not change the presence of Representatives.  There will still be Academic Building Representatives  and Residential Representatives.  A second bill proposed by Best would increase the number of off campus Representatives from two to four.  The explained that “the representation disparity between underclassmen and upperclassmen will be made greater by the passing of C.B. 88.04 (the original bill mentioned to implement class officers).”

Although Congress has passed both bills, Amendments to the Constitution also require a vote from the student body.  In order for the changes to actually take place, there has to be at least 50% of the student body in agreement.
